September

I know I am not alone when I say this, but September is probably my favourite month of the year. Not because it’s my birthday – mind you, that helps – but because some of my favourite plants are at their best.

Firstly, the grasses are flowering well; their fluffy heads look great and the movement and interest they give to other planting is second to none. Add to that the Rudbeckia and Echinacea (still don’t know why we changed the names, but there you go). Looking at the Rudbeckia with its bright yellow flower and dark centre, and you get the feeling that it is celebrating the end of summer and beginning of autumn all by itself. From there look at Aster Frikartii Monch, which looks super planted with grasses (not the best picture, I know, but hopefully you get my point). Another plant that is still looking good is Cotinus ‘Grace’ this looks great with all of the above. I could go on but my dear lady wants me to finish some decorating! Grasses remind me of the sea, so my mind is there while my hands are busy with the paintbrushes.
