I have just been taken to Germany to look at tree nurseries, mainly large stock. By the nice people at Deepdale Trees (take a look at their website www.deepdale-trees.co.uk they have some wonderful stock).
If you ever get the chance then go! one of the many things I thought was great was that so many of the nurseries in Germany are in the same area, for instance we flew into Hamburg and out of Bremmen two days later and in the region between those two airports there is over 600 hundred nurseries, so you can see so much in a short space of time. I think my favorite was our final visit the nursery was run by an old school friend of Matthias, who runs Deepdale, the nursery specialises in large trees.

Anyway, I have been lucky enough to see some wonderful things in my industry but I don’t think I have seen anything like this. It was not so much the size of trees which to start with most people would not think possble that they could be lifted and re planted, which is only made possible by moving the trees around the nursery every three or four years – remember, some of these trees are 25 metres and more. By constantly moving the trees you encourage the tree to develop fibrous roots and this is how the lifting is made possible.
Anyway, it wasn’t just that which impressed me. It was the attention to detail; firstly, the place was spotless and very well organised. Added to that the trees were so interestingly placed. As you can see from the pictures, shrubs, trees and topiary were mixed in such a way that it gave you planting ideas. As we worked our way around the nursery, I could pick up not just passion from our host but also a desire to keep improving.
Wow, wow, wow – that about sums it up and thanks again to those nice people at Deepdale.
