I have just signed up to champion the new diplomas for 14-19 year olds. I didn’t realise, but by 2013 there will be 17 on offer covering a wide range of subjects, including the one I am championing the new Environmental and Land-based Studies Land Skills diploma.
 
I really do believe our industry needed to get behind this. If you look at early education in Horticulture (I know, what a crap name – no wonder we struggle). Anyway, where was I? Oh yes, primary schools - I feel we do well here. Love them or hate them, hats off to the RHS, its Primary School campaign and website is spot on. But what happens when the kids go to secondary school? The wheels come off, as we don’t do anything that I can see anyway. How many times have I listened to people say kids aren’t interested? That’s crap, they are. This Diploma gives us the chance to get in front of 14-19 year olds and tell them how great this industry is. If you think about it we cover everything from sciences to design. Please get behind it, if we don’t you can guarantee the government will soon take it away. I could go on but I’ll leave it there, I will keep you updated as we move forward.
