I don’t know about you, but every year I get a pile of books for Christmas and, to be honest, I don’t really get much time to read them. So I suppose, if there is any upside to this horrendous weather, it is that I’ve managed to work my way through the annual pile this year!
My favourite one is ‘Tender, A Cook and his Vegetable Patch’ by Nigel Slater, it’s going everywhere with me at the moment. To be honest, he’s not my favourite on TV but he writes beautifully. He briefly takes you through the development of his garden, which is mainly the veg patch admittedly, but then gives you an realistic take on his grow-your-own experience. This is good because it doesn’t portray that we can all be self-sufficient from our own back gardens which, to be honest, some books do. Added to that there’s also an A-Z veg guide on How to, Where to and What with (growing and cooking). It’s top drawer, simple to follow and full of interest and anecdotes.
All in all, it’s a great book that and – if you’re quick – you’ll probably still get it in the sales……
p.s I cooked a great aubergine dish last night with onions, garlic, cream, topped off with parmesan and a little thyme then baked for forty’ish minutes. My wife loved it and she’s not that keen on aubergines so can’t be bad.
